9:00am The sentence for a teen charged in the death of a man on the Iron Horse Trail will be handed down today. 60-year-old John Ferreira died after being attacked while out walking with his 34-year-old son in Kitchener shortly before midnight of New Year’s Eve 2010. Police arrested two youths and charged them with second degree murder. Ryan Bates was 17 at the time, but was just six days shy of his 18th birthday, so he conceded that he should be sentenced as an adult. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault.
