Manitoba Flooding

Manitoba residents anxiously await updates from officials, following a ‘controlled flood’ near Portage la Prairie.

A dike along the bulging Assiniboine River was intentionally breached 24 hours ago. Since then, floodwaters have been creeping across a swath of land and threatening some 150 homes in an effort to save hundreds more.

Water is now flowing at a rate of 500 cubic feet per second, that’s about enough to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool every three minutes.

That could increase six-fold if need be.

The area is being monitored on land and by air 24 hours a day to avoid any catastrophic dike breaks.
