A Cambridge company developing clean energy to heat homes is getting 4 million federal dollars to get its technology off the ground.
Cambridge MP and Minister of State for Science and Technology Gary Goodyear made the announcement at Ecologix Technologies today.
The company’s president Stephen Davies says their cold climate heat pump system, which works by pulling heat out of the air, will cost more to install, but will save home owners in the long run.
“If you have oil or propane, this technology promises to be somewhere between one-half and one-quarter the cost to operate,” says Davies.
“So yes it will be slightly more expensive than putting in an oil furnace, but it will be very quickly paid back.”
Davies says the technology, which is already being used in supermarkets, will go head to head against natural gas furnaces in the new construction market.
The federal investment will help Ecologix fine-tune its technology and provide incentives for home owners to install the system.
