Cambridge takes centre stage

Cambridge residents got a peek today at what the new Drayton theatre will look like when it opens in the summer of 2012.
City officials, Drayton Entertainment, members of the arts community, and Cambridge MP Gary Goodyear were at Cambridge City Hall for the unveiling today.
Drayton’s artistic director Alex Mustakas described the $14 million project to the crowd in a ‘few’ words:
“This will be an environmentally friendly, non-polluting, labour-intensive, tourism generating, community responsive, renewable resource.”
The theatre will be 59,000 square feet and will feature 500 seats.
The front lobby will be contained by a glass wall facing Grand Avenue.
Mustakas says that feature will draw people in.
“We want people, even if they’re not in the lobby and are driving by, to say, ‘How can I get in there? It looks like everyone’s having a good time,” he says.
“They’re not wearing tuxedos, you can come in jeans. We want to be accessible, and that’s what it’s about.”
A plaza will also allow community groups to put on concerts in the summer.
Mustakas calls the project a sustainable venture that will lead to a myriad of economic spinoffs.
The City of Cambridge recently decided to borrow $5 million in this year’s budget to pay for its share of the project.
