Get ready to ring in the new year with a full roster of fabulous free events happening in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge. With a wide range of activities, from skating and face painting to a ginger ale “champagne” toast and fireworks at midnight, it’s an evening of fun for the entire family.
In Kitchener Civic Square, the festivities starts at 5 p.m. with a performance by children’s entertainer Erick Traplin. Meanwhile, mascots from the Kitchener Rangers will be on ice to skate with the kids. There are also free “make and take” crafts provided by the Waterloo Region Record and Kitchener Radio Group. At 6 p.m., Traplin will lead an early countdown for kids who can’t stay up until midnight. The children’s countdown will be followed by a performance by the Irish Celtic Dance Academy and more kid’s music by Robert Davis at 7 p.m.
The music continues at 9 p.m. as former Canadian idol contestant Alisha Nauth opens for K-W Glee. The group is made up of 52 local young people between the ages of 16 and 21. They will serenade the crowd by singing and dancing to popular musical hits until the countdown at midnight.
In Waterloo Public Square, the fun starts at 8 p.m. with music, dancing and skating on the outdoor rink. There will be an early countdown for kids at 9 p.m. and fireworks with a ginger ale “champagne” toast at midnight.
There will be free indoor public skating sponsored by Tim Hortons from 7-9 p.m. at RIM Park, Albert McCormick Community Centre and the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. There will also be a free public swim from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex’s Swimplex.
In Cambridge, Hespeler Arena is hosting the year-end party. From 6 – 8 p.m. there will be an on-ice video skating party, complete with party favours after the early countdown. For little ones, there will be a bouncy castle, face painting, a giant game of Connect 4 and plenty of costumed characters to visit with.
