Escape the mall using Twitter

Your smartphone can now help you beat the crowds at shopping malls.

PayPal Canada has introduced “mall traffic reports” on Twitter. All you have to do is follow Pay Pal Canada @PayPalCA to find tweets and real time pictures with the hashtag #ESCTheMall.

“What we’re doing is trying to help Canadians understand what the mall traffic is like and getting people to tweet about it,” explains Nicky Mezo, head of marketing at PayPal Canada.

Mezo says the initiative follows an Ipsos Reid survey that found half of all Canadians find the crowds and long lines of holiday shopping frustrating and also that shopping takes a lot of time – an average of five trips to the mall and 11 hours for each of us.

PayPal’s Twitter feed will also provide online shopping tips and is supported by an “escape the mall” Facebook page.
