Inquest makes five recommendations

The members of a coroner’s jury have made some suggestions they hope will prevent another tragedy like the death of Ron Pilon.
The 59 year old was killed in a house explosion in Kitchener while he was working on a flooring renovation, and the inquest looking into the fatality wrapped up in Superior Court in Kitchener yesterday.
One recommendation states all electrical power to a home should be turned off before any flammable gases are used in renovation work.
Also, that proper ventilation of a work area should always be ensured.
Pilon was severely burned when fumes from a floor sealer built up in the Gatewood Road house, and then ignited.
Overseeing the inquest was Regional Supervising Coroner, Dr. David Eden, who tells 570 News the process was a trying time for Pilon’s son, Ron, who employed his dad in his flooring business.
Eden says whatever sparked the floor sealer fumes to explode was never discovered, but turning off all the electricity when such fumes are present is one way to prevent such explosions.
Eden says other recommendations deal with getting health and safety information and regulations into the hands of all contractors.
He says Ron Pilon told the jury “his knowledge of the risk was limited.”
