Another call for gondolas up to SFU

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – The snow may be gone, but eyes are still looking at Burnaby Mountain after buses stopped running Thursday afternoon. Our first big snowstorm may have been a perfect time for a gondola to run up to SFU.
Ken Hardie with TransLink says several students who rely on transit were stranded at the school when the buses stopped serving the campus due to slippery conditions.
He explains a gondola would have got those students down the mountain.
“A gondola literally and figuratively rises above it all, and can, with the right design, handle a large amount of people up and down the mountain. Gondolas are famous for operating on mountain peaks for skiers. They’re designed to operate in very cold wintry weather.”
Hardie admits they don’t know if a gondola would technically work. Even if it would, the transit authority would have to figure out where to get the estimated $70 million to build it.
