King Street has won an award for the City of Kitchener and the IBI Group.
It was recognized for having a sustainable streetscape, as well as the innovative design for flexible, summer/winter sidewalks, which have succeeded in drawing more people downtown.
The Community Places Award was recently presented at the International Making Cities Livable Conference in South Carolina.
Features of the new streetscape include wider sidewalks, sustainable planters that filter storm water and additional bike racks.
“The city is not just building a street; it’s building a vibrant people place.” said Cory Bluhm, Kitchener’s manager of downtown community development.
