Home destroyed by fire – human remains found

Officials say they’ve discovered human remains, after a house was destroyed by a fire in Eden Mills. The blaze happened Friday afternoon on Ash street in the tiny community near Guelph. An elderly woman was able to make it out alive, but her 80 year old husband was unaccounted for.
The Ontario Fire Marshal was called in to investigate. After searching the home, they found human remains in the basement. The home was totally destroyed by fire.
The County of Wellington OP.P. Crime Unit and Western Region O.P.P. Forensic Identification Unit were called in to assist with the investigation. Fire Investigator, Lonnie Schubert of the Ontario Fire Marshalls Office attended.
Victim Services Wellington responded to provide support to the family members involved.
Three firefighters were injured in the blaze. Paramedics treated them at the scene for non-life threatening injuries and they were released.
The Coroner, Dr. John Ewen, attended the scene. The body that was recovered has been removed to Hamilton General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The investigation is continuing.
