Waterloo’s mayor and city council may be getting a six per cent wage hike this year if the proposed increase is approved next week.
If passed, Brenda Halloran will make a base salary of 71 thousand dollars, up from 67 thousand and council will make 29 thousand, up from 25 thousand.
The overall cost to taxpayers is 15 thousand dollars.
A consultant’s report and citizens’ committee made the recommendation.
Waterloo’s Deputy Chief Human Resources Officer Rob Deyman tells 570 News right now, Waterloo’s municipal leaders are making less than the average mayor and council.
Reaction from taxpayers is mixed.
Some say this is not the time to be giving pay increases, with so many job losses in the area.
But, the city is in good financial shape.
It is expected to post a 1.3 million dollar surplus for the 2009 fiscal year.
