The City of Kitchener is pausing for sober second thought where the Rockway Senior Centre is concerned. A staff report had recommended closing the 35 year old facility next year and re-locating its programming to other community centres in the city. According to the report, Rockway needs about $1 million in repairs.
Kitchener Councillor Berry Vrbanovic tabled a motion today that recommends stepping back from the proposal to close the centre next year and instead take a closer look at the city’s older adult strategy. Vrbanovic tells 570 News the proposal to close the centre sparked too much emotion and made it difficult to deal with the situation. He thinks a short-term solution can be found to keep Rockway open for a few years while analyzing how best to serve Kitchener’s seniors. Vrbanovic believes that solution could involve a facility where young and old citizens can share space but where the need for seniors to have some space of their own is recognized.
Council will debate the motion at its meeting on February 22nd.
