Number of local police chases down.

A new report shows the number of local police chases last year dropped from previous years.

Regional Police chased 21 vehicles on area roads in 2009 for criminal and traffic offences, like impaired driving and robbery.

That’s down from 44 chases in 2008 and 38 in 2007.

Superintendent Kevin Chalk told The Record he credits the decline to well-trained officers.

Since 2007, they have been taking courses on how to avoid dangerous pursuits.

That includes calling another cruises to get in front of the suspect vehicle before trying to pull it over or wait until the driver gets in a traffic jam.

Officers are taught to end a pursuit if it puts themselves, the public or the people inside the vehicle at risk.
