Highrise towers approved in Waterloo, on hold due to water capacity

A high-rise development has been approved for Columbia Street in Waterloo, but the cranes and bulldozers will have to wait until the water capacity issue is resolved.
City council voted “yes” on Monday to the triple-tower project for 143 Columbia St. W., between Phillip and Albert streets. Two of the buildings will be 28 and 27-storey tall, described as mixed-use, plus another 26-storey building that will be residential-only.
The three towers will provide 632 residential units, with 122 parking spaces for vehicles and 182 parking spaces for bicycles.
The development is on the north side of the university district.
The project will also provide almost 400 square metres of commercial space.
A statement from city hall said council approved the project with a site-specific holding provision, meaning the actual development of the site was prevented until sufficient water servicing capacity could be verified.
