Feds won’t appeal Oberlander ruling

The Harper government will not fight a ruling last November which effectively restored Helmut Oberlander’s citizenship.

The 85-year-old retired Waterloo developer has been under the threat of deportation by Ottawa for his part in a Nazi death squad during the Second World War.

Oberlander’s lawyer, Eric Hafeman tells 570 News there is no doubt surrounding Oberlander’s status.

Hafeman says the written reasons do not have to specifically say he has his citizenship back.

Ottawa has been trying for 15 years to have Oberlander deported.

The federal government now has the option of giving up its effort at deportation, or trying for a third time to revoke his citizenship.
