Seniors protest possible closing of Rockway

A group of local seniors staged a protest today as they fight to keep a Kitchener seniors centre open.
They were at the Rockway Seniors Centre, amid fears the city may close the facility.
Those concerns come following the release this past fall of the city’s Older Adult Strategy, which suggests the next wave of seniors are not interested in such a facility and perhaps the city should look for other uses for Rockway.
No decision has been made on the fate of Rockway, but the centre’s vice-chair, Don Bowman, tells 570’s Jeff Allan Show it’s like a second home for many seniors.
He says there are about one thousand members at Rockway and it’s a place where they can chat and drink coffee with people their own age, dance, exercise and take part in many other activities.
Bowman says it’s also very accessible with good parking, on a bus route and with no stairs.
He admits, they are also working with the city on alternatives should the facility in fact be closed.
