Metro Restaurant temporarily closes after crash (update)

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A Kitchener restaurant temporarily closed its doors Friday following a crash.

Metro Restaurant on Victoria Street confirmed the details on its Facebook page.

The social media post said the restaurant sustained some damage to its front-end due to a collision and no in-person dining or take-out orders would be available for the rest of the day.

Metro is expected to reopen Saturday during regular business hours.

Constable Andre Johnson with Waterloo Regional Police confirmed to CityNews 570 that the collision happened around noon in the Victoria Street and Margaret Avenue area.

Lanes on Victoria Street were shut down for several hours and a police drone was deployed for the investigation.

“As a result of the initial investigation, we learned that a Jeep was travelling north on Victoria Street, attempting to make a left turn into a business in the area of 164 Victoria Street North,” said Johnson. “At that time, two tow trucks were seen travelling south on Victoria Street at a high-rate of speed.”

According to Johnson, one of the tow trucks then crashed into the Jeep.

A 73 year-old male, the driver of the Jeep,  was taken to an out-of-region hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Following an investigation, both tow truck drivers, aged 26 and 42, were charged with stunt driving. Their licences were suspended for 30 days and their vehicles seized for 14 days.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses and for anyone with further information on the crash to contact them.
