Kitchener MP provides update on Canada Disability Benefit

By CityNews Staff

The Disability Benefit would offer financial support to those with disabilities.

The legislation was unanimously passed through a second reading in the House of Commons in October.

Mike Morrice, MP for Kitchener Centre, asked the Prime Minister directly about fast tracking the bill in the House of Commons, but did not receive a response.

He told CityNews 570 that those with disabilities are living in legislated poverty, highlighting that recipients of ODSB receive just over $1,100 a month.

The Green Party MP said that he is not able to name a dollar amount for the cost of the bill, because it is still up for regulatory review with the provinces, but predicts that it will be a significant amount.

“Budgets are about priorities,” said Morrice. “Our federal government is in the midst of giving these oil and gas companies that are making hand over fist, posting record breaking profits … in the last budget we committed a new $8.6 billion subsidy to them.”

Morrice added that the provinces would be more inclined to contribute to the bill if the federal government committed to providing a specific amount of money to the benefit.

The benefit, known as Bill C-22, has been referred to a committee, meaning that the bill is up for review by a small group of MPs.
