Canada Day in Waterloo Region: Where to go and what to see

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

One big party is being planned at the University of Waterloo this July 1st.

The Canada Day celebration at UW started some 34 years ago by the Federation of Students.

90 student volunteers are helping out this year at Columbia Lake field, and this free party kicks off at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Kelly McManus is Senior Director of Community Relations & Events at UW.

She tells 570 NEWS they also have a lot of community partners help pull this massive event off every year.

It's a BIG party too – as McManus says up to 60,000 people attend each and every year.

On stage this year? Sloan, and Fred Penner for the kids. The big show? The fireworks, of course! Those start at dusk, and should wrap up around 10:30 p.m.

In downtown Kitchener, a special Canada Day celebration will get underway starting at 6 p.m.

Live music will takeover the core, with the main act paying a special tribute to Canada's unofficial soundtrack – The Tragically Hip.

The Strictly Hip takes the stage at 8:45 p.m., with fireworks beginning just after 10 p.m.

In Cambridge, the fun runs all day long in Riverside Park – with children's activities, a food truck alley, beer garden, and live music planned.

That fireworks show kicks off at 9:40 p.m.
