Another round of ramp closures looming at Highway 7/8, Trussler Road interchange

Here we go again! Reconstruction work is about to resume on the Highway 7/8 Trussler Road interchange in Kitchener.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) started the interchange improvements this past fall and the next phase will begin on May 2.

It will involve shutting down the Highway 7/8 westbound off-ramp to Trussler Road for about two weeks, while the eastbound off-ramp and both on-ramps will also each be closed for around a week to accommodate asphalt work.

The MTO is expecting the interchange reconstruction project will be complete by the end of the summer.

The project includes asphalt paving, guide rail, sewer, concrete, and electrical work.

Further ramp closures are expected throughout the duration of the construction but no further dates have been provided at this time.

The MTO also launched a review into the area a few years ago which involved examining traffic volumes, delays and collision history.

A statement released in the summer of 2022 read, “Our analysis indicated that there is a benefit to intersection improvements, which could include the addition of traffic signals or a roundabout.”

The MTO has since confirmed the current rehabilitation work is separate from any future intersection improvements at the Highway 7/8 and Trussler Road interchange.

An e-mail statement said, “MTO is now working with the Regional Municipality of Waterloo on the development of options for improvements at this interchange as part of the project they are undertaking for Trussler Road from Yellow Birch Drive to Bleams Road.”
