Cambridge’s Haven House could be paid off by March

Women's Crisis Services is hoping to see a zero on it's mortgage payments for Cambridge's Haven House by the end of the fiscal year.

When Haven House first opened its doors on Acorn Way near Elgin Street in Cambridge in September of 2016, there was a sense of hope for the women and children who would benefit from the shelter, but there was also a sense of dread as a $4 million dollar mortgage payment loomed over the heads of those at Women's Crisis Services.

In the recent annual report, it states that by the end of 2017/2018, the total balance owing in connection with Haven House was $1,021,935.

CEO Jennifer Hutton says she hopes to have that mortgage payment down to zero my the end of the fiscal year, which would be March 31, 2019.

Hutton says with that debt abolished, they can use funds towards much needed services at the centre.

“It really gives us flexibility in how we can be innovative in regards to our program, and to look at any gaps in services that we want to fill. It does give us flexibility when we don't have to worry about the mortgage.”

Hutton says in the last year, the community has generously donated over $1.1 million dollars in cash and gifts in kind.

Information on how to donate and a list of items needed for those currently using services provided by Women's Crisis Services can be found here.
