26-storey condo tower, residential development proposed for Kitchener

Kitchener's Ottawa Street North could get a big residential boost.

A three-building development has been proposed, by Kitchener-based Zehr Group, along Ottawa Street between King Street East and Weber Street East.

The project includes a 26-storey condo building, with a four-storey podium beneath that will stretch beyond the tower. Its neighbour will be two six-storey residential buildings.

“As we identify sites that we think are right for redevelopment, there's a number of factors that go into it,” said Zac Zehr, Vice President of Development for Zehr Group. “Access to transit, proximity to interesting amenities, and accessibility to the Expressway … we feel this area is prime for some intensification.”

A pedestrian walk-way will link the residential area to Ottawa Street and can be used for walkers or cyclists. Zehr said the four-storey podium has potential for retail space as well. The development will have 306 parking spaces, with 230 underground.

“There's certainly opportunity to look into condominiums or some form of rental housing on this site,” added Zehr. “I think this is a great candidate site to be a combination of both.”

Zehr said the group will make a sizable donation to one of its strategic partners who specialize in affordable housing and the services that go along with those types of projects.
