Man drives van onto crowded beach in Port Dover

By Caryn Ceolin

Provincial Police say an alleged drunk driver narrowly missed striking a family with small children, after driving onto the main beach in Port Dover.

Police say they received reports late Saturday morning that a man was attempting to reverse his van onto the roadway, when he mounted the sidewalk and steered onto the beach area – crashing into a tent and several chairs in the sand.

The family was forced to scatter to avoid being hit.

Police say a number of quick-thinking bystanders called police and detained the driver until officers arrived.

A 43-year-old man from the Hamilton area was arrested on charges including dangerous driving, impaired driving, and breaching probation.

OPP say the Good Samaritans were instrumental in preventing the driver from potentially colliding with other beach goers.
