BOX boosts local artists

There’s more momentum in the local arts community.
As the region’s Prosperity Council conducts a search for its first CEO, the BOX Art Show and Sale is back for a second year.
Founded in the fall of 2009, the art show and sale aims to provide opportunities for visual artists living in Waterloo Region to show and sell their work while promoting visual arts education and appreciation.
“For a lot of our BOX artists this is their first show or they have never attended a formal arts institution,” explains BOX founder Cathy Farwell. “Things like how do I write a bio, where do I get business cards, what’s a body of work? We can help them with all of that or put them on the right path.”
Each year BOX partners with a different charitable organization and invites a member of that organization to join the curatorial team.
After partnering with Rosemary Smith and the K-W Community Foundation last year, BOX has teamed up this year with Cathy Brothers and Capacity Waterloo Region.
The charity receives a percentage of all BOX art sales in return for the assistance.
A call to artists went out in May and, following an extensive jury process, 20 finalists have been chosen to participate in this year’s show.
Farwell is hopeful the BOX show becomes a fixture on the local arts calendar.
“You’re never going to be able to say you’ve been to BOX because the venue, the charity partner, the art and the artists will change every year,” says Farwell. “The only thing that will remain the same is the date, which we’ve chosen to always be the first weekend after Remembrance Day.”
Farwell believes the annual show will contribute to the “vibrant cultural scene” being established in Waterloo Region through efforts like the Prosperity Council.
This year’s BOX Art Show and Sale takes place Saturday and Sunday at The Breithaupt Block in Kitchener.
