Waterloo regional police warn residents about projector scam

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is investigating reports of a scam where people try to sell projectors with heavily discounted prices by post-secondary campuses.

Police say they received a total of five reports of people trying to sell the projectors. They added that in each of the incidents, lower-cost projectors were rebranded to look like expensive models.

Waterloo regional police are asking students and other community members to be alert following multiple reports of the scam.

On Sept. 14, officials say that a victim reached out to police after they realized they were scammed. In the Waterloo regional police’s news release, they say that the victim was walking on the University of Waterloo campus when they were approached by multiple people out of a dark-coloured SUV.

When talking to the victim, they said they were transporting projectors and needed a place to store a spare unit. The victim was told that they would be paid for storing the projector. Though, a deposit would be needed first for the victim to hold the item.

Police say the suspects then drove the victim to a local bank, where $5,000 in cash was withdrawn. The victim then gave the suspects the cash.

Officers say that the suspects then left with the money, leaving the victim with the low-value projector.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is asking anyone with information to call 519-570-9777, ext. 4496.

Investigators are reminding residents to be cautious of unsolicited offers that appear too good to be true and to avoid providing cash, e-transfers, or personal information to individuals they do not know.
