Hold and secures lifted at Kitchener public schools after armed robbery investigation

Three public schools in Kitchener were placed in hold and secure on Thursday afternoon as police investigated an armed robbery in the neighbourhood.

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) said the hold and secures were implemented at the direction of the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS).

Initially, it was just Westheights Public School affected, then Driftwood Park Public School and Meadowlane Park Public School followed suit shortly after.

Police confirmed that officers responded to the Westheights and Driftwood drives area for an investigation. They said it related to a robbery involving a firearm, and no injuries have been reported.

Parents, families and caregivers of students were asked to refrain from calling or coming to the schools during the hold and secures.

The WRDSB said students continued learning in class, and many routines remained in place, as the concern was outside of the school buildings. Access to and from the schools was restricted as a precaution.

The hold and secures were all lifted shortly after 2 p.m.

Despite search efforts by a police drone and the canine team, the male subject was not located. Police said while the hold and secures ended, an investigation is ongoing by the General Investigations Unit.
