Mother Nature has been giving the cold shoulder to Waterloo Region for the last several weeks, but that may be coming to an end.
Starting on Monday, the region is expected to see some significant temperature changes. Denise Andrecchi, 570 NewsRadio weather specialist, said the high for Monday will be around -9 C, and the thermometer will rise to zero on Tuesday.
“What we’re really watching are these temperatures beginning to stabilize and a more seasonal weather pattern moving into Kitchener for what seems to be for the rest of February,” said Andrecchi.
The warmer streak is expected to last over the next week to 10 days, before colder temperatures are expected to return closer to the end of February, beginning of March.
The long-term seasonal average for daytime temperatures in Waterloo Region for February is -3 C and -12 C for overnight averages.
Some snowfall is also expected starting overnight, heading into Tuesday morning. Much of the week is predicted to be warmer, with Environment Canada saying the highs will be hovering in the minus single digits with a mix of sun and cloud heading into the weekend.
Yellow cold warnings have been the main story when it comes to weather over the last several days, with temperatures sinking into the -20s C, but feeling like they’re in the -30s with the wind chill.
Geoff Coulson, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada, said persistent air flow from the high Arctic has been impacting southern and eastern Ontario since mid-January.
“So this particular stretch of cold weather has been long-lived for the area. If there is any good news, it is the fact that the weather pattern is now breaking down, and it looks like a return to more seasonal temperatures is on tap,” said Coulson.
Despite the several yellow cold warnings, Coulson said there were no records broken for cold temperatures, dating back to 1879.
“We did dip down to -25 to -27 area over the last couple of days, certainly much colder than normal. But, based on that long period of record going back into the 1800’s, no new records were set for the area.”
