Don’t be surprised to see Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) officers out and about in Waterloo over the next couple of days.
Members of the Crime Suppression Analysis Response teams will be going door-to-door in the University District, raising awareness about an increase in reports of property crimes. Things like vehicle break-ins and thefts from vehicles, as well as reports of damage. They’ll be providing information and tips to help prevent these crimes.
Constable Chris Iden, with WRPS, told 570 NewsRadio the area being targeted is of special concern.
“It is a very densely populated area where you will see high-rises and lots of parking areas,” he said. Adding, “there have been ongoing property crime issues with smashed windows and people taking items from inside the vehicle.”
Iden said the officers knocking on doors, particularly in student housing neighbourhoods, will be informing residents about the current uptick in property crimes as well as sharing ideas how they can protect themselves from falling victim.
Iden mentioned the officers will be coming around Dec. 1 and 2.
“We will be having door hangers for anyone who is not available. That will have basic information on it on how to keep anybody safe and protect their belongings.”
Those who have questions for police, this would be a great opportunity to ask. Iden said this type of public engagement is something WRPS are hoping to do more frequently in the future.
