What is happening across Waterloo Region this weekend?

The events calendar is going to be packed this weekend here in Waterloo Region.

From Moparfest in New Hamburg, to KidsPark in Victoria Park in Downtown Kitchener, it’s going to be a jam-packed weekend in Waterloo Region.

Moparfest

Canada’s largest Mopar car show will be returning to the streets of Downtown New Hamburg. Moparfest officially runs from Saturday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. On top of show cars, the two-day event will feature activities including food trucks, vendors, and 40 local artisan vendors in a flea-style market.

Michelle Schertzer is an event coordinator with Moparfest and said they traditionally have over 1,500 show vehicles from the 1930s to today during the two-day event. For the first time ever, the show will feature YouTube personality Deboss Garage as they showcase some vehicles they have been working on.

“They’re really great guys, they just want to hang out, chat and share the information and connect with people,” said Schertzer.

KidsPark

Victoria Park in Kitchener will be transformed into a child’s paradise as KidsPark returns for another year. All the fun gets started at 11 a.m. on Sunday and runs until 5 p.m.

Dozens of activities and entertainment are expected, including a sports zone, bouncy castles, inflatable obstacle courses, a Taylor Swift and Katy Perry tribute, and Roos Island will be transformed into Dinosaur Island. The event is also free to attend.

Steve Roth, the manager of special events at the City of Kitchener, said this is one of their favourite events of the year.

“One of the things we’ve learned this year is that it is important to have these free events,” said Roth. “I know there’s a lot of pressure on families to come out with their kids, and this event is totally free.”

Far East Asian Market

The second annual Far East Asian Market will be returning to Downtown Kitchener for a second year. The night market will run from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday and will be at 300 King St. E., stretching down to Frederick and Cedar Streets.

This year’s event will feature 52 different vendors, as well as music, karaoke longue, a bar and several workshops.

Arnold Tescas, the arts and culture manager for the Downtown Kitchener BIA, said they wanted to invite their South Asian culture as well to take part in this year’s event.

“There’s going to be some vendors that are coming from the Indian cultures, Pakistani cultures, even some from Afghanistan as well,” said Tescas. He added that other types of food will include Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, and Taiwanese.

“There’s quite a mix of Asian cultures there.”

The event is free to attend.

Conestoga Mall Block Party

With back to school season now in full swing, Conestoga Mall is looking to get the party going as they celebrate three new stores. On Saturday Aug 16 and Sunday August 17, the Back-to-School Block Party will be held in Winners Court from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Several activities will be held including STEM and robotic workshops, LEGO inspiration tables and interactive game lounges.

“Back-to-school is a big moment for families, and we hope our fall programming at Conestoga Mall gives the community a fun and memorable way to make the season feel special.” said Patrick Fleurantin the Marketing Manager for Conestoga Mall in a press release. “Alongside the Back-to-School Block Party, our new retail openings arrive at the perfect time, enhancing the fall shopping season and reinforcing the centre’s position as a go-to destination in the region.”

The daily robotics workshops run at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and the LEGO building workshops are from 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The three new stores at the mall include Levi’s, Swatch and Kiokki.
