A massive pedestrian bridge over Highway 7/8 in Kitchener got the official ribbon-cutting treatment on Tuesday, after several delays and questions about the project’s timeline.
The bridge connects the Strasburg Road and Chandler Drive area with Avalon Place and Southmoor Drive, and has been open to the public since May 5.
Andrew Doman is the project manager for the pedestrian bridge and said the project is on budget. Some of those delays encountered included supply chain issues, postponing the bridge lift for safety concerns and getting specialized equipment.
“We’re very thankful to see the public using the bridge now and hearing great feedback,” said Doman.
The total cost of the project was $9.5 million, which was paid for by the region, the province and the federal government through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program—Public Transit Infrastructure Stream. Doman said as of now, $9.1 million has been spent, and the region is working with contractors on finishing costs.
Regional Councillor Colleen James was at the ribbon-cutting ceremony and said there has already been a huge return on investment.
“We know there are runners, joggers, cyclists and (other) people who are now being able to travel safer,” said James. “You can’t put a price on that when it comes to safety in this community.”
The bridge was originally installed last August, which resulted in a portion of highway 7/8 being closed for the weekend.
