Headed to the ROW airport? A traffic detour is now in place

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A temporary traffic detour is in place near the Region of Waterloo (ROW) International Airport in Breslau.

The region announced March 14 that the left turn lane at Airport Road has been closed by Waterloo Regional Police Service.

The municipality cited the ongoing strike by outside workers, who have been picketing outside the ROW airport.

“To improve safety and reduce traffic congestion, travellers and visitors to the airport are asked to access the main entrance via the roundabout at Fairway Road North and Kossuth Road,” read a release from the Region of Waterloo.

People were told to arrive at the airport early in case of any traffic delays along Fountain Street and, “A CUPE Local 1656 picket line may be present at the main entrance.”

Flights are not impacted by the strike.

The 150 regional outside workers have been on strike since March 3 and quickly put up picket lines, including outside the airport. Two picketers were struck by vehicles in separate incidents in the first week of the job action and two drivers were charged. No injuries were reported.

Full details on the temporary traffic detour are posted below.

Southbound

Vehicles travelling southbound on Fountain Street North (from Breslau and points beyond) will be redirected to the roundabout at Fairway Road North and Kossuth Road, then back to the YKF main entrance, to turn right onto Airport Road.
