All WRPS officers now equipped with body-worn and in-car cameras

Officers with the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) are adding another tool to their toolkit with the implementation of cameras.

The police service has been rolling out camera implementation since 2023, but as of this month, all WRPS officers are equipped with body-worn cameras (BWC).

The devices will be worn on the torso and in police cruisers to record interactions with the public, including anything from a traffic stop to an arrest.

Officers will manually turn on the camera as interactions start. People will know they’re being recorded when they see the light turn on.

Those recordings are encrypted and go straight to the police database. Recordings can’t be altered or edited in any way.

If an officer fails to turn on their camera during an interaction with the public, they could be disciplined or even dismissed.
