Winter weather travel advisory ends for Waterloo Region

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A winter weather travel advisory has ended for Waterloo Region.

The weather alert was issued Wednesday night, and replaced a blowing snow advisory that was in effect for Wednesday.

Environment Canada estimates between 5 and 10 cm of fresh snow fell in the region Wednesday evening into this Thursday morning.

This comes as another burst of winter weather swept through Waterloo Region creating slick conditions.

Environment Canada first issued a blowing snow advisory for Wednesday due to the potential for snow and moderate winds gusting up to 70 km/h.

The conditions were initially expected to continue into Wednesday evening, but that’s when Environment Canada replaced that alert with a winter weather travel advisory before removing it Thursday afternoon.

According to 570’s Meteorologist Jill Taylor, the temperature is expected to drop significantly throughout Thursday and overnight, with wind chills of -14 C for the afternoon and -17 C into the evening.

“Strong gusty northwest wind today, so the wind has shifted directions, gusts could exceed 60, even 70 kilometres per hour at times today,” said Taylor.

She added that temperatures are expected to climb to 4 C by the time Sunday rolls around.
