Kitchener MPP Aislinn Clancy tables motion to protect Waterloo Moraine

As the Region of Waterloo continues to grapple with water capacity constraints, a local MPP is pushing Queen’s Park to legislate protection of groundwater.

MPP for Kitchener Centre and Ontario Green Party Deputy Leader Aislinn Clancy is calling on the provincial government to permanently safeguard the Waterloo Moraine.

Speaking at Queen’s Park Tuesday, Clancy noted that, despite critical water capacity issues in the region, the provincial government is allowing corporations to develop local wetlands and water sources.

“(The province) has sided with profit-driven sprawl development. It has made it harder to build more gentle density in existing areas, which is the cheapest and fastest way to build more affordable homes.”

Clancy said she tabled the motion to prioritize water for residents over profits and wants land use planning direction to be given to landowners, municipalities and provincial ministries.

She wants to see an end to what she calls “reckless legislation” allowing development on local wetlands without proper oversight.

“Our water is for our communities, our families, our farmers and our homes. Our water is not for gravel pit quarries to take over nine million litres a day. That’s enough to support over ten thousand residents whose wells are already drying up.”

This comes as The Region of Waterloo is expected to grow to one million residents by 2050, with drinking water use expected to increase accordingly.

It’s worth noting, Tuesday marked the last day of the spring sitting for the Ontario Legislature as MPP’s take a 21-week break until the end of October.
