Local Movember campaigns kick off for another year

By Justine Fraser

Movember is back for another year.

Until the end of the month men in the region will be sporting handlebars and horseshoe-style moustaches in an effort to raise funds for men’s prostate cancer research.

Since coming to Canada in 2008, Movember has raised and invested over $107 million for men’s health. Last year Movember invested $5.8 million across the country.

Lisa McDonald has been the co-chair of the local Movember chapter for a decade, participating in Movember even longer. McDonald said the funds go towards mental health programs for men as well.

“People know about it now, at the beginning we used to have to kind of explain to people what
Movember was and what it was for, but now people just expect to see all those moustaches pop up in the month of November,’” said McDonald.

“It also helps to fund testicular cancer research, mental health and suicide prevention.”

The events for Movember kick off November 1 with a comedy magic show at the Kitchener Public Library. They are also hosting events later this month at a Kitchener Ranger’s game and at the KW Titan’s home opener on November 23.

To follow the Movember KW group, people in the region can find them on Instagram under their name “Movember KW where they will boost up other individuals and groups raising money for Movember.

“All of us have men in our lives, whether their husbands, dads, brothers, uncles, co-workers and its good to remind them to get those health checks,” reminded McDonald.

She mentioned that the community has been very supportive over the years and they wouldn’t keep it going if the community didn’t get on board the way they do.
