Spiritual Detectives looking to explain the unknown in Cambridge

By Matt Betts

Leah Dubrick has had spiritual experiences her entire life but it wasn't until her own children were grown that she decided to explore what they really meant.

It was an odd occurrence, one day while watching her grandson, that got the wheels turning for her to create Spiritual Detectives, a team that investigates the paranormal.

“What really set things in motion for me was when I was watching my grandson, who was a baby at the time, playing on the floor and I saw what looked like sparks from a sparkler floating around him,” Dubrick says.

“I took a video, and saw floating lights in the video. I had experiences all my life and wanted to explore and learn more about them,” she says. “Being Anishnabe I already had a different upbringing than most and my children were grown, so it was my time once again to explore what interested me.”

Dubrick, who resides in Kitchener, struggled to find a local team to work with and eventually ended up with a group in Hamilton. After that didn’t work out as planned, she started her own team.

“I ended up following a team in Hamilton and I learned the basics from them,” she says.

“I did attempt a few times to partner with somebody else, however, since I only wanted to help people and the dead, and the ‘partners' wanted to get the evidence to post on Youtube, it didn't work out.”

The newest member of Dubrick’s team calls Cambridge home, prompting her to look closer at the city and the history behind it.

After reaching out via groups on Facebook for places to investigate, she received numerous suggestions.

“I've received a large number of locations recommended to investigate in Cambridge, from a couple schools, the post office, Langdon Hall and some houses that people had experiences in,” Dubrick says.

“The hard part is locating the owner names, manager names, phone numbers and making contact to seek permission.  It's a lot easier when the person contacts me to check things out for them.”

Whenever there is talk about the unseen, there are bound to be skeptics. That’s something Dubrick understands and believes is a good thing when investigating. Her team is more about looking for the reason things are happening rather than simply trying to find spirits.

For those overly skeptic or interested, they’re welcome to join along, Dubrick says. Maybe then they can experience some of the events she has over her career.

“I was at a popular asylum in the states and I was leaving when I heard a really loud, rough masculine grumble sound in my left ear,” she said.

“I’ve seen the shadow of nothing pass me. I’ve been touched, choked, the wind knocked out of me.  Everything is ominous, especially when you are in complete darkness and a loud bang on a wall goes off right beside you.”

Despite the unnerving experiences, Dubrick keeps coming back to investigate to help those who are looking for answers.

“My favourite part is seeing the client finally relax, especially when children are sleeping through the night,” she says.

“A lot of people contact us when children are being affected. I really have learned not to expect anything, every case is different. Sometimes we have no logical explanation.”
