NEWS RELEASE
SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL CLUB

*************************

A group of passionate women in the Kitchener-Waterloo region are forming a new Soroptimist International Club to improve the lives of women and girls in the KW community. They are looking for local women interested in making a difference by joining this international volunteer organization (www.soroptimist.org).

According to Jean Skillman, past governor of Soroptimist International of Eastern Canada Region, Soroptimist International has close to 80,000 members across 126 countries. “These members care about making the world a better place by helping women and girls facing challenges unlock their potential and achieve their dreams,” says Skillman. “We strive to give them the resources they need to enhance their education, skills and employment prospects so that they can create positive change for themselves, their families, their communities and the world.”

Empowering Local Women

The new KW Club's focus will be on spearheading programs that lead to social and economic empowerment, including a special emphasis on access to education, as this has been found to be the most effective path to self-development. The name “Soroptimist” means “best for women,” and that's the goal of Soroptimist International: women at our best, working to help other women to be their best. The Soroptimist International of Kitchener Waterloo Club will continue and expand on many of the initiatives of the local Cambridge Club, which has been an active member of the community since 1981. Each year, Soroptimist Cambridge supports a variety of projects that benefit women and girls locally and globally. Skillman explains that a major initiative is the annual “Live Your Dream Awards.” Last year, the Soroptimist International of the Americas awarded $2.1 million USD in educational grants to 1,467 deserving women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families. In total, more than 30,000 women in the Americas have received grants to enable them to pursue their dreams. Other Cambridge Club initiatives have included the “Soroptimist Fresh Start Fund for Haven House,” which assists departing residents as they begin a new chapter in their lives after a period of domestic violence and abuse. Women and their families receive hampers filled with personal items, household goods and gift cards. Soroptimist Cambridge has also helped fund the YWCA's “Small Steps to Success”-a 12-week pre-employment and life skills program for women who face significant barriers to finding work. The program helps women gain the necessary confidence and skills to take steps toward a more meaningful life.

Make a Difference

Now, local women have the opportunity to establish a new Soroptimist Club in Kitchener-Waterloo. It's a great way to help KW women and girls who are facing obstacles, while also building lasting friendships and achieving personal growth. Contact Jean Skillman at jski@bell.net for more information or to arrange a face-to-face meeting.
