A new report shows that dangerous chemicals being released into the Canagagigue Creek could pose serious problems for farm properties in Elmira.
The Chemtura Public Advisory Committee’s final report on the area shows that extremely high levels of DDT were discovered.
That chemical is a banned pesticide that studies have shown can produce birth defects in humans.
The report also indicates that Chemtura’s existing pump and treatment system is inadequate to control leakage from the site.
Officials are calling on the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to conduct a thorough investigation into the off-site leakage near the Chemtura Site.
