An NHL dream come true

It really is an NHL dream come true for Kitchener’s Mark Scheifele.

The 18-year-old will suit up for the Winnipeg Jets in their season opener versus Montreal on Sunday at 5pm Eastern time.

Scheifele had an impressive pre-season with the Jets, leading the team in scoring with 4 goals and 4 assists in five games.

He was Winnipeg’s first round draft pick, 7th overall, in June’s NHL Entry Draft and signed an entry level contract with the team on Monday.

Scheifele tells 570 News his approach heading into training camp was to prove his critics wrong.

“People were saying I was picked too high, I wanted to prove I was the right pick and could stick all year” Scheifele said.

The Kitchener product will wear number 55 with the Jets.

He says that’s the number he wore in minor hockey and it’s a tribute to his brother who also wore 55 and has been an inspiration for him and a big supporter.

Scheifele played his early hockey in the Kitchener Minor Hockey Association system.

He also spent one season with both the Kitchener Dutchmen and the OHL’s Barrie Colts.
