The first day of the golf season for the City of Kitchener’s public courses got off to a chilly start this morning.
Tee times at the Rockway Golf Course scheduled for 8:00 a.m. were pushed back one hour because a -7 Celsius wind chill made it too cold on the course to start that early.
Nonetheless, staff tell 570 News almost every available tee time had been booked even before the first tee-off came.
Todd Doering, Golf Course Superintendent for both Rockway and Doon Valley Golf Course, tells 570 News both courses came through the winter in as good shape as he’s ever seen, thanks to a steady cover of snow and very little ground frost.
Doon Valley is scheduled to open for the season at 8:00 a.m. Saturday.
Doering says a number of features debut this season at Doon Valley following an expansion program. Those features include a 9-hole course, 18-hole championship layout course, and a 9-hole “chip and putt” plus a gold academy for learners.
The Waterloo Golf Academy has been open for the past week. It’s reporting great conditions and says tee times are available.
