Peter Thurley has lived in Waterloo Region since 2002, after moving here from Abbortsford, B.C. to attend the University of Waterloo. Peter and his wife Shandi have made Kitchener their home and Thurley says they cares greatly for their community.
Thurley works in the riding as a retail store manager for AML Communications, and is that company’s representative at the Greater KW Chamber of Commerce. Thurley believes that social and economic justice are key planks to building a better Kitchener, and is focused on creating an environment in which his family and others can flourish. In February of last year, Thurley was named one of Waterloo Region’s “40 Under 40” for his work in the community on behalf of the poor and the homeless.
Thurley successfully advocated for a national housing strategy, gaining support from the Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council and the Housing and Homelessness Umbrella Group. He gained support from the Waterloo Regional Council for Bill C-304, which affirms the right of Canadians to have safe, secure, adequate and affordable housing; organized a fund-raising BBQ alongside his faith community in support of Supportive Housing of Waterloo.
Thurley continues to be involved in his community by volunteering at the “Out of the Cold” homeless shelter, serving on the board of directors for Supportive Housing of Waterloo, and in a strategic planning role on the board of directors for the Social Planning Council of Kitchener-Waterloo.
