Kitchener Panthers welcome defending champions for Sunday action

There are few tougher challenges for a Kitchener Panthers team looking to break a 4-game losing skid than the CBL league leaders and defending champions, the Welland Jackfish. That’s who they’ll face in Sunday evening action at Jack Couch Park, with Kitchener looking to hold onto the 6th seed, the first spot below the cutoff line for the 2026 CBL playoffs.
The Panthers enter Sunday having lost 4 straight, 2 to the 5 teams above the playoff line, and 2 to the other 3 teams below. Kitchener’s offense had been one of the top units in the Canadian Baseball League early in the season, going further into the campaign without a game under 4 runs than any other team in the league. However, the production has been a rollercoaster for the Panthers in the month of July, with both 3 games with 1 run scored, and 3 games with 14 or more runs batted in.

Kitchener’s Sunday contest will be the 4th straight day of baseball for the team, with one more game still left to play at Jack Couch Park on Tuesday. The frontline starters have all pitched for the Panthers in that stretch, with Minyety, Rodriguez and Evan Elliott all starting throughout the weekend. While no starter has been announced, Kitchener will likely start either Owen Macneil, or a reliever to kick off a bullpen game on Sunday.
On the other side, the Welland Jackfish have looked as advertised as they defend their 2025 CBL championship. Some speculated that the Jackfish could be entering a slump of sorts, sitting just 5th in the standings a few weeks prior to the all-star break. However, their production has shifted, particularly on the mound, and Welland now sports the league’s best record through their last 10 contests. Welland is 3-2 on the road in the month of July, including a breakout offensive performance where they put up 20 runs against the Brantford Red Sox.
Welland also enters Sunday in the midst of a four-day consecutive run, having played two games at Welland and one road contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.
Environment Canada predicts a chance of showers and risk of thunderstorms through Sunday afternoon, but as of 11:15 a.m. no announcements have been made as to the game’s status.
Sunday’s contest is the Panthers’ “freezie day”, where all fans in attendance under 18 receive a free freezie! Freezies will fit the weather, as with the humidex, Sunday afternoon will hover in the low 30 degree range.
