As the 2025-26 school year comes to a close, school board trustees are looking ahead to the next school year.
The Waterloo Region District School Board passed a $969.7 million budget earlier this month, and now the local Catholic board has approved its numbers.
The Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) is moving forward with a $451.8 million budget. They say the numbers are “balanced” in the 2026-27 plan.
The bulk of the spending is planned for classroom staffing and salaries.
“While total enrolment is projected to increase, growth has slowed in the elementary panel and is transitioning to the secondary panel, influencing both revenue and staffing needs,” reads the report.
“At the same time, cost pressures continue to increase at a rate that exceeds funding adjustments, creating ongoing financial strain.”
Learning resources, special education, and school facilities costs come in around $55 million.
Highlights of those resources included a $750 per teacher budget for new elementary classroom supplies, and continued support for math, mental health, reading and students with special needs.
The WCDSB is also preparing for two new schools set to open in September, which include the new joint public-Catholic elementary school in Cambridge.
