It was billed as a battle between two heavyweights in this Memorial Cup, but the Kitchener Rangers delivered a knockdown blow to the Everett Silvertips on Monday night in Kelowna.
The Blueshirts took down the Western Hockey League champions in emphatic fashion, 6-2 the final score.
Rangers Captain Cameron Reid was named player of the game for his performance, netting the game’s opening goal and adding three assists en route to the win.
Rangers netminder Christian Kirsch followed up his shutout performance on Friday night against Kelowna with an even better night against Everett making 40 saves, many of them in the crucial moments of the game.
“We haven’t faced a team like this,” said Rangers Head Coach Jussi Ahokas. “I thought we got better. Kirsch was good in the net, and we scored a lot of good goals. It’s still the round robin, so we have to get better again tomorrow.”
With the win, the Rangers have booked their ticket to the semi-finals, though a win against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens on Tuesday would send the Rangers straight to the final game on Sunday.
The QMJHL champions are coming off an overtime win over Kelowna on Sunday, but lost to Everett on Saturday and will close out their round robin against Kitchener.
