GRCA fundraiser urges getting outside for better mental health

With nicer days ahead, more people will be taking to the many hiking and walking trails around Waterloo Region.

As people head outdoors to shake the winter blues, the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is raising money to help maintain its natural areas.

The fundraiser is called Trails to Wellness and comes during the month of May, Mental Health Awareness Month.

It’s widely accepted that spending time in nature has a positive effect on people’s overall well-being, including mental health.

“Our trails promote mindfulness, an opportunity to slow down and really reset. They also promote physical activity, which we know is good for us and social connection. Family and friends can gather in these spaces and enjoy each other’s company as well,” said Serina Catania, Supervisor, Communications and Marketing, GRCA, while a guest on The Mike Farwell Show.

The GRCA operates and maintains hundreds of kilometres of trails and natural spaces throughout the watershed. Regular visitors to conservation areas like Shade’s Mills in Cambridge or Bellwood Lake near Fergus understand a visit includes an entry fee.

But the GRCA operates many areas that are free to access and have no direct revenue stream.

Cataina explained that the money raised through Trails to Wellness will help maintain those spaces.

“These funds raised will support essential upkeep and maintenance, such as repairing trail surfaces, managing vegetation and clearing debris. And it will also support larger projects, including maintaining boardwalks, bridges and crossings throughout the areas.”

People can support the Trails to Wellness campaign through an online donation.

The goal this year is $50,000.
