Waterloo Region was hit with heavy rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday morning, which could worsen flooding in areas along the Grand River, the Nith River and the Speed River.

Environment Canada had a yellow warning for rainfall in effect but it was lifted in the afternoon.

The weather authority called for as much as 40 mm of precipitation, with areas directly affected by thunderstorms potentially receiving more.

The heavy rain led to a road closure due to flooding in Waterloo. Albert Street was briefly closed between Weber Street North and Longwood Drive.

Flood warnings have been issued for the City of Cambridge, Six Nations, West Montrose, adding to previously issued warnings in St. Jacobs, Conestogo, New Hamburg, and Ayr.

Environment Canada had issued a special weather statement for thunderstorms early Wednesday, however that statement was lifted before 5 a.m.
