Structure fire in Ayr causes major damage, one person sent to hospital

Waterloo Regional Police Service and the Ontario Fire Marshal continue to investigate a fire in Ayr that resulted in injuries to one person.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Northumberland Street in Ayr around 9:15 a.m. on Monday. Police said the building sustained “major damage,” and a section of Northumberland Street had to be closed, along with several side streets in the area.

The blaze engulfed the top floor of a building, home to a number of businesses, including Hitched Coffee and Ayr Village Pizza. One person was taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

An update provided by staff with the township on Tuesday morning indicated that only Northumberland Street remains closed to traffic – between Stanley Street and Gibson Street. All other closures previously in place have since been lifted.
