There’s a call across the board from Regional Council on Wednesday night to improve snow clearing at transit stops around the municipality.
A motion brought forward by Councillor Matt Rodrigues looked for a way to improve the service after an especially harsh winter. Since November, over 215 cm of snow has fallen on the region, and snow-clearing crews have had a hard time keeping up.
“This winter, we were challenged with consecutive snow events that kept resetting the timer on when it stopped, needed to be cleared, and if you were out in the community or taking the bus, you would see just that.”
It raised accessibility concerns from transit riders.
Councillor Chantal Huinink seconded the motion.
Huinink, who is a wheelchair user herself, acknowledged that work is already being done to improve snow-clearing efforts but is interested in seeing a plan for enhanced service come back in the fall.
“Most people who use transit, rely on transit, without other options. Accessibility of transit stops is critically important.”
The motion itself didn’t need much discussion and was passed unanimously.
Doug Spooner, acting commissioner of transportation services with the region was on board with the motion as well.
He said there has already been work done to improve the service, but recognizes that improvement is needed.
“We’re welcoming of the motion, happy to report back in the fall before we get back into next winter season, and we’re already looking at operational approaches to get this right,” said Spooner.
“We need to get better, and we will.”
If you notice a transit stop in need of snow clearing service, you can call the customer service line or reach out to GRT online with the four-digit code at the stop in question.
