Don’t be alarmed if you hear fireworks in the city of Waterloo on Tuesday night.
Several cultures celebrate Lunar New Year and a popular way to celebrate is with fireworks.
There are a few regulations to be aware of when planning a fireworks display.
First and foremost, they are only permitted on the designated day and within the designated hours. In the case of Lunar New Year, it’s between the hours of 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Fireworks displays are only permitted on private property. The displays are not allowed in city parks or other locations.
Waterloo is the only municipality in Waterloo Region to permit fireworks on Lunar New Year.
Fireworks were a hot-button issue in Waterloo Region in 2025, with Kitchener and Waterloo banning the private sale of fireworks within city limits. Cambridge deferred a decision to be dealt with at a later date.
