Anyone looking to play some indoor sports in Waterloo during the winter months now has a new spot.
Wilfrid Laurier University opened it’s new-multi-use dome at University Stadium on Seagram Drive.
The first day open to the public was on Sunday, Feb. 1 and is expected to be used for the university’s varsity teams, including football, rugby and soccer, as well as for intramurals and community rentals.
The air-supported structure stands at over 80 feet tall, covering 118,750 square feet, including the turf field.
“It is going to be the largest seasonal dome in university sport in Canada…and is the second largest air-supported structure in the country; so this is really an important milestone,” said Laurier President Deborah MacLatchy during a press conference on Jan. 27.
The structure was created in partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union and the Graduate Students’ Association, Laurier Athletics, the City of Waterloo and several donors.
“Partnerships are obviously really key to the City of Waterloo to be able to bring something like this to life,” said Waterloo Mayor and Laurier alumnus Dorothy McCabe.
“Laurier is an anchor in our community, and it’s important that we can find new space. We know Waterloo’s a little bit short of land sometimes, so we need to use it creatively, and this is a perfect example of that.”
The structure goes up in December every year and is expected to come down after the May long weekend once the weather gets warmer.
The Dome is the latest improvement made in the area as part of the Seagram Drive Athletics & Recreation Project. Other improvements include tearing down the old grandstands, a new turf field, new field lighting, a new LED videoboard scoreboard and stands that can hold up to 3,000-5,000 fans.
Throughout this year, it is projected to host over 1,800 hours of programming.
